Unfinished grooming job. Hair left inside my dogs ear and was told I needed to “have a vet take it out.” 24 hours later I’m at the vet paying for ear infection treatment and having them remove the hair, in which my vet noted “this groomer did not do their job and this is incomplete. A vet is not a barber.”This was my first time at Petco La Costa and after 4 hours waiting for my dog to be groomed, I will not be returning.

I called your company the day of my purchase to praise the young man who not only helped me find the items I needed but took everything out to my car. I told him I was also looking for an item I didn’t see in the store and showed him the empty package. He told me to please return to the store with him because the item was on the shelf so back we went and I made another purchase. When I got home I called you to praise this young man whose name isMASIMOI remember the first time I came to this store several years ago ALBERT treated me as if I were visiting royalty. He found me the best products at the most affordable prices. A few days ago I needed live worms for Mitzvah, my turtle friend of 27 years. The worms I needed weren’t available but ALBERT took the time to look at each type of worm and found the perfect substitute until the worms Mitzvah loved were in stock. So I’ll be back in a few days to see ALBERT and get a live worm feast for my turtle ALBERT I thank you and rest assured Mitzvah is grateful too.And yesterday Massimo and Lily were so helpful as I switch all my pet needs from Costco to Petco because not only Petco quality products but customer service. Lily was amazing. She now knows all about my pets and their needs. My schnauzer, two African greys, two Norwegian Forest cats and my turtle I mentioned above. Thank you Lily, Massimo and Albert always.

Our girls were desperate for a pet and we’re so excited to get Rocky the Betta fish! Jada was so helpful in getting us what we needed. She wrote out step by step instructions for us on the box. She was so kind to us and the kids. Thank you!

Deanna at Petco Grooming was the best groomer we’ve met in the area for Truman’s bath and brush out! Her energy was infectious and you could tell he was actually happy to be there. All in it only took a few hours so you know that they’re attentive to your dog and he’s not locked up in a cage for extended time. We plan to take our dogs here every few weeks because they were so cheery and kind to our doodle (who is a character himself). Thank you, Deanna!!

It was a nice pet store. I brought my two small children there just to see some pets, you know, do something different than go to the playground, and they loved seeing the pets here. We can't get pets yet as we are living in a hotel until we can get into an apartment, so the kids had a lot of fun.

I have had generally good experiences here for many years! Employees have always been happy and helpful. I'm only prompted to write a review because I was given a hard time purchasing a betta fish this past weekend and left feeling very embarrassed. My boyfriend had brought me here to pick out a betta tank, decor, supplies, and a fish for my birthday. He had come a few days before and almost purchased it all himself, fish included, but decided at the register to come back with me instead. He was not given any trouble or questions by the cashier about purchasing a betta. When I came back to pick everything out, the cashier gave me a hard time and said they weren't allowed to sell bettas if you didn't have proof of a tank set up at home already and further lectured me about bettas while a line formed behind me. I was confused if this was an actual rule or just a concerned employee? I said I understand that people sometimes don't care for bettas properly but I have been a betta mom for years and years... many have lived over 5 years. I'm savvy with water treatment and betta health. Her lecture was uncomfortable and I was very embarrassed. She let us leave with the fish anyway but clearly let us know she disapproved. If this is a real rule, it should be posted in the store and followed by all employees. If it is not a rule, it should not be brought up at the register.

Amazing service from all of the staff, specifically the awesome chinchilla lady, Danielle! (Sorry if I spelled that name wrong 👀) After spending a good amount of time on research and planning, I've come to the conclusion that chinchillas aren't for me because of the time commitment and the difficulty of keeping the chin safe, prices were really good though! Much lower than I thought they'd be.Danielle was so amazing, giving great advice, making sure I wasn't in the dark and had all the info I needed to make a commitment to a pet. Chinchillas are so weird, and cool! (They can live around 10, to even 30 years! 🤯)Even with the amazing cuteness, it's a little too much. (I hope the beautiful chins find happy homes) The pets were well taken care of and loved, and I'm sure they'll continue to be later on.So grateful for the extraordinary service at this Petco, and I'd love to let everyone know that the service here is just out of this world! (Maybe I'm just used to bad service, but still!!)

Ask for Chelsea, or Emily when you arrive and you will feel like you have your own personal concierge Pet Person Assistant. One of the best customer experiences I've had and with 2 different reps on the same occasion. They both went the extra mile to make sure I got what I needed and took time to help me with both of the fur babies I was taking care of. Oreo & Ms Brown Brown are very happy weiner dogs now.

1/30/22: Danielle helped my daughter and I get set up with a beta fish tank and all the trappings. I managed in the entertainment industry for years and Danielle’s customer service was very high quality. She was friendly, knowledgeable, proactive, and came across as genuinely enthusiastic to be there assisting us with our needs. To any managers this concerns, at least from what I’ve seen, she’s a winner and absolutely raised the level of our experience. Thanks.

I switched from one groomer at a different business to Petco and I'm really glad I did. My dog received a great cut and he was done in less time than other places so he was less stressed when I picked him up. Additionally, he normally cowers behind my legs when he has to go to the groomers but this time he ran up to the groomer and jumped up on his legs to say hi. He was excited to see him!Brody looks so cute with his short hair and I will be making all my appointments at Petco from now on. This was his second appointment.

These guys ar me me difficult to deal with. They refused to sell my daughter a $.39 goldfish because they believed in 5 years it would be too big for our 10 gallon tank. He refused to sell us any fish at all so we put back about $150 worth of other merchandise and left the store. My daughter was very disappointed. We will not be shipping here again. They turned what was supposed to be a fun experience into a very negative afternoon.

The general/store manager is very much so racist. She is very rude to customers and reeks of cigarette smoke. I’ve seen how she talked to the ONLY black lady who works there it’s truly disgusting. My husband and I will not be returning to this store.

I usually take my dog to be groomed at the Escondido store which does an excellent job, but they are always booked at least a month in advance. I had forgotten to make an appointment and their website suggested that I try the La Costa location, so I did. The grooming staff was friendly and helpful and their computer knew exactly what I wanted done. An inch on the back and a half inch everywhere else. When I picked up my dog, she looked scruffy and uneven, like she needed a good brushing. When I got home and we looked her over in detail we could see the trim was not done right, and was much longer and very uneven, with some areas completely untouched. I don't know if my experience was singular, but I will never go back there for grooming again. Very disappointed with this location's grooming services.

Very disappointing service from the pet store side today.We bought a parakeet for our daughters two days ago with all the trimmings.Girls were in love with "Blueberry" and extremely distraught to find him dead in his cage.Wife went in to get a replacement and was treated horribly by the on-duty manager tonight...extremely rude and unprofessional.I realize exchanging a bird is not the most pleasant task but you can at least pretend to be a little empathetic.

Awesome service overall, always run out of crickets though. Gave 4 stars instead of 5, because I called ahead and sales associate said she would put a product aside for me that often runs out and have it waiting at the register. When I arrived, it was not at the register but thankfully still in stock.

I had to return to the La Costa store to buy more crickets for my son's tiny, 17-year-old fire belly toad. I had just been there four days prior and only 2 out of 8 survived despite my competent efforts. I told the store associate my problem and he replaced the crickets without charge.I will NEVER EVER set foot in the National City (Highland ) store but I will return to this location. They won back my business for Petco.

They treated me horribly they did not let me get a snail because they die from in a bag within a hour a like like 2 minutes away, my guess is because they were about 30 minutes away from closing they just wanted too rush me back out of there. The workers were also very rude when I asked. So there for I will no longer want too associate myself with that store again.

Im new to the area, originally from Nevada. So I wasnt aware that they didnt sell certain animals I was looking for, one associate "Rachel" was very helpful. Ljttle did she know, she was talking to a marine. But that was besides the point, she was very helpful and asked all my questions. And to be quite honest, I wanted to ask her out lol. Im thinking about buying some of her recommendations just because she was very politce and helpful.

PETCO may have a bad reputation, but from what I garnered from the managers, they are trying very hard to distance themselves from PetSmart's preceding reputation. This may be biased as I just had an interview for a job with them, but they were very thorough about the care of the animals, and they give their employees the right to refuse service if the animals welfare in the care of a particular parent could be harming. As a large reptile and overall animal enthusiast, I am impressed with the state of the store and expertise of the staff. Five stars.
