I am so incredibly grateful to have discovered Bates Grass Fed Beef after months of searching for a rancher in our area raising steer in a manner that is sustainable and respectful to both the animals and the land. Mr Bates was incredibly kind and answered all of my questions swiftly and thoroughly.My husband and I waited patiently for 2 months for our half steer to be ready for pick up from Bates butcher partner in Bakersfield and when we finally had our beef tucked into the freezer we couldn’t wait to try a steak!! Our first meal was a gorgeous t-bone we split… holy cow (pun intended) it was every bit worth the wait. Absolutely delicious! There is truly a remarkable difference in taste and it’s evident even in the color of the meat that this animal was at peak health.Feeling incredibly lucky to have a freezer full of this happy healthy beef. For three years now we have been buying our beef from Bates Grass Fed Beef. The first time I drove up to the ranch at California Hot-springs it was breath taking. What a healthy and natural environment for the cows to roam freely. My family and I are very happy with the beef. It is tasty and the bones make the best, most flavorful broth. We honestly believe that healthy cows are truly happy cows. Dan Bates and his family has the best and most friendly customer service ever. I am so happy to have found a local source for such high quality beef. I can't recommend Bates Grass Fed Beef enough.

We have ordered beef from Dan/ Bates Grass Fed Beef twice now and will do it a third time when we get close to running out of meat. The meat produced is of high quality and you can taste the difference, compared to store bought. Exeter Meat locker works hand in hand with Dan and the process is seamless. The Bates are first and foremost excellent people! This excellence spills over into a brilliant ranch that reflects the ethics of stewardship with a multigenerational outlook. In my experience purchasing ethically raise meat the Baits always displayed a servants heart and a no comprise focus on quality of life for their cows and the families that that benefit from their labor. My family only buys beef from them and when we run out we go without until they have availability.

In the Spring of 2020, I purchased half of a steer from here, because I appreciated the quality of the meat, the cows are grass fed and grass-finished, the fact that they treated humanely even to the end (they are slaughtered at their home instead of being transported to a slaughtering house, and the prices are very reasonable when comparing to similar businesses and the grocery store.We purchased a very large chest-style freezer to hold the meat. We were very happy with how much we purchased, because it allowed us to have a variety of cuts of meats, and we were even able to request the head, liver, heart, bones, etc. They even offered us to be able to keep the skin of the animal if we wanted to salt it and treat it ourselves to turn it into a rug or to have a professional do it for us.At the end of the day, we really enjoyed the quality of the meat, the service we received, and the affordability of the meat. Oh, and we really enjoyed eating the delicious, healthy meat that we received from Bates Grass-Fed Beef.

I purchased 2 full grassfed steers and both tasted gamey with a musty smell. It was so gross and expensive
