I had a dog before for 14 years and he was like a brother to me and I told myself I never ever wanted your dog ever again after he passed away. Now I have a son who is interested in having a pet and I was really hesitant about coming here because I've been to two other humane society facilities and it just wasn't a good experience, but I came here with both kids and my partner and I wanted to share. It was an absolutely positive welcoming not only an experience but it was a good environment. You could tell these people truly care about their animals and they truly want to inform sometimes like I don't look like a dog person and you know until I tell them I've had a dog for 14 years. They could have talked down to me cuz you know I don't exactly look athletic or in shape but the reality is despite my weight. I'm a very active person and probably the most active person in my family when the majority of the rest of them are half my size. But anyway, they were welcoming patient and explained to us the process of how we can Foster a dog for 2 weeks and they even had recommendations on more calmer dogs if it was helpful for our toddlers. I'm not a dog person anymore again. I've lost my brother and I didn't want to go through that again, but I left today feeling optimistic that I feel like in my heart I could accept a dog in my life again and I don't think that would have happened without the help of these ladies there.

I had a great experience with this place. I wish there was more than 5 stars. Please support/adopt from here. Everyone who works and volunteers here truly cares about the animals they work with and they have knowledge for new and seasoned pet owners that is incredibly valuable. Thank you to everyone who put in the effort to make this such a great adoption experience. Also, the puppy I adopted is thriving in my home already and I attribute that to the care and training that was provided here. Also, I drove from Sacramento, well worth the drive.

Our golden retriever Lucy recently crossed the Rainbow Bridge. We were thankful that Berkeley Humane was able to accept our donation of Lucy's opened bag of good quality kibble, treats, vitamins and toys. She would have wanted the shelter pups to enjoy them on her behalf.🐾

Berkley Humane knocked our socks off!!! They love their animals and helped teach us about our new kitty! I hope you support them as much as possible. They are good people with a great message and what they do is a ministry to the animals they help!

People were helpful and friendly. When you want to see the pet of interest, in this case a cat, there's no actual room to interact with each other except through a cage. Much needed space for this is needed.

Very happy and satisfied with my experience at Berkeley Humane. Adopted the sweetest four year old cat from here on my first visit. Fee was $175 for an adult.Staff are friendly, welcoming, and it’s obvious that they deeply care about the animals, and their welfare. For those interested in adopting a cat, you’re allowed to pet and play with them. Be sure to sanitize after you interact with each cat. Also let the cat choose you!Adoption process consists of paperwork - agreements and a questionnaire. Staff will review the paperwork and once approved, you’re free to bring the new furry friend home. They also will provide you with a packet of medical records and a general information packet, litter, and samples of the food.

We adopted our kitten from here. The process was very smooth, hassle free and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had checked multiple shelters before our visit here and most of them were not letting us adopt kittens unless we adopted pairs. Thankful we found Berkeley Humane. We were provided transparency about our kittens prior health conditions. Also the counseling provided after we signed the adoption papers was super helpful for us (first time pet owners). We are so grateful that we found our sweet boy Tookie (shelter name: Eagle).

Added a new family member from here. Staff are super helpful and the facility is in a nice spot by the water. The actual paperwork and process to adopt was super simple as well. (Jimmy G, Oct 19)

I grew up in Berkeley. So visiting the Berkeley Humane Society to donate was a pleasant reason to return to my hometown. My family loves cats, and Berkeley Humane has always been there to help them. BEST CARE anywhere!

The entire staff is so considerate and caring. We adopted a pair of kittens, and they made the process so easy. They went through the paperwork, explained everything and sent us home with their favorite blankie, some wet & dry food. So happy we chose to adopt through them. Thank you so much šŸ’“

HORRIBLE! Not only was *I* treated rudely, so was my poor cat who came in to get neutered! I had specifically told them prior to bringing him in that he was from an outside colony and only been handled by me to see if he was considered feral. I was told "if you can touch him, hold him, hes coming inside to you..then hes NOT feral". Of course when you drop them off there you dont get to go in with your pet...they get picked up from outside in the car. So my cat is now inside with all new people for the first time and his only person he knows nowhere in sight. Needless to say he wasnt a happy camper and I got charged $50 extra for it. Then, I was told when picking him up the vet had to talk to me. Was VERY rude, dismissive, uncaring and unsympathetic while telling me my poor baby has FIV and that he "probably would never heal and would have a short life expectancy". I was literally in tears. Not the worst of it yet! I get him home and oh man. His ENTIRE back end, tail, legs..were all completely covered in blood! The fur was all matted and stuck to his surgical area. It looked like he had been butchered. Ive worked in vets for years and NEVER sent a surgical patient home not cleaned!!! I sent photos and said that was really horrendous. Their response? That since my cat is semi feral they couldnt clean him after he woke up. Um...why on earth would you NOT clean him while hes sedated??? WHY would you choose to try to clean up an agro, hurt cat after surgery? They didnt. Instead *I* had to sit there for hours trying to get him remotely cleaned back up because he was freaking out over his fur sticking together. Totally unprofessional and im so thankful atleast he didnt get an infection from their lack of cleanliness!

I’ve been a volunteer here for a little over a year. The staff is compassionate and professional, everyone works hard to keep the facilities clean, and the animals (of course) are amazing. It’s incredibly fulfilling work. Available animals are posted by 7pm on Thursday to the website. If you are interested in a specific animal, especially a puppy, kitten, or ā€œspecialā€ breed, I’d suggest coming at 10:30 on Fridays, before our adoptions start for the week (they run FriSatSun 11am-5pm). There are no holds, so the early bird gets the puppy! In addition to adoptions, there are tons of other services provided that make this place really special to the community. There’s a pet food pantry, dog training classes, low-cost spay & neuter, and even counseling for grief after the loss of a pet. This is what’s called an ā€œadoption guaranteeā€ shelter, which means that no animal is EVER euthanized for time or space—everybody who comes into the shelter has as long as they need to find a family, no matter how full we get. I’m writing this in August 2018, and we have a cat who has been with us since January. Berkeley Humane can afford to do this because we are a private nonprofit (funded by donations, controls our own intake of animals—we DO NOT TAKE IN animals from the public, we pull 100% of our animals from other, overcrowded shelters) as opposed to a public municipal (funded by the government, must take in any and every animal). No shelter wants to ā€œkillā€ animals, and we are lucky to be able to operate the way we do (without the constraints of a public municipal shelter).

During the entire 6 months that I volunteered here, I can confidently say that no other work place can have a more sincerely positive atmosphere than Berkeley Humane. Everyone who works here truly wants to be here, they are supportive and kind to one another, and they care about the animals. They are patient, loving, and maintain their good humor no matter what the animals do. The dogs and cats are well taken care of, the volunteers and staff are appreciated, responsible and dedicated. A great organization.

I'm giving this place a one star because there is no zero star, my family and I went here and we found a cat that we fell in love with, all of the volunteers were being very nice but when we got in the line to adopt him a volunteer come up to us and told us that someone else had already adopted him, my daughter myself and him son were all in tears because it was honestly the worst day of your life, we have been talking about getting a cat for a little over a year and we were all crushed to hear this news, and the volunteers did not seem to be simplicity at all! Over all a horrible experience!

I adopted Champ, now know as Charlie. It was the best decision I've ever made. He's made my life complete and is a wonderful therapy animal. If you are looking for a new friend, then I highly recommend a shelter. The animals have had it so rough, just a little bit of kindness goes such a long way.I guarantee you won't be sorry.

I love what they do. We went to drop off blankets and food after our beautiful 13 year old English bulldog died. They were glad of the donations, but truly sweet about our deep sorrow. Will continue to donate...and someday...

Thank u for allowing me to adopt my favorite guy Artie, he's still funny, wild, sweet, and has his own personality, he's my forever animal, i saved him, but he doesn't really know he saved me when i was going through a rough time, as fate had it we came into eachother's lives when we needed someone the most. Thank u for my Artie, i will continue to treat him like a king.

I volunteer here, so can vouch for the quality of care these animals get. I've seen so many animals arrive in dire need of socialization and medical help. And I've seen them all get adopted. The gratitude and love the animals give back is priceless. Looking for love? Open for adoptions Fri-Sun 11-5.

After a loss of our dear family dog, we searched for another. At Berkeley Humane Society we found understanding and professional help in the adoption process. The staff was thorough in determining if we were a good fit for the dog we wanted. We couldn't be happier with Berkeley Humane and of course, our "Cassie".

Called to volunteer and it's a flat, no, and I can't imagine adopting a pet without meeting them first. I would think if you could show proof of vaccination, wear a mask and sanitize your hands first that adopting an animal in person would not be a problem and same goes for volunteering.
