Great service with knowledgeable staff. Small, local store if you want to get away from big box experience. And they have a nice rewards program. PS - they spoil my dog

Wonderful place for premium dog food, chicken feed, fish food - our family has a lot of critters so we're here all the time! I've been a customer for more than a decade and rely on the staff's friendly help and recommendations. We're lucky to have a local place like this for toys, pet gear, and food.

I've been going here for many years. This store has a nice selection of both companion and wild bird food. The variety of bird feeders is inspiring. I can find my particular dog or cat food as well. The prices and quality are better than most stores. The frequent buyer card is a nice incentive too. They stay open past 6pm which is nice for working people commuting home.

Calling for a price check shouldn’t be a problem. I gently asked if the shopkeeper knew about the cat food and she said, “Yes.” Ok, so I asked if by chance she knew if the better quality wet food is manufactured in human grade food safe environments. “I donno.” Ok, it was a stretch, but my old pet food supply store Knew all about that stuff and told me to ask about it if I shopped elsewhere. Oh well. So, I asked what the general price range of the wet foods were, not all 20 prices, I clearly asked: “In general, what do the wet food prices range from?” Because the air is purple and the particulates are dangerous for me to be running in and out all over town, looking for a restock of my easily hospitalized kitty. He gets stones but hates hates hates the grain packed C/D prescription diet, so these past two years we’ve seen massive energy improvements and avoided $2,000 hospital bills by feeding the little dude great quality food. Ok? Except, we’re helping my partner’s parents on holiday and suddenly had to stay longer as fire evacuees. I didn’t share any of this, I simply asked for a quick quote as I do my research. I just wanted to get a quote and some (what I was told should be standard) info - without breaking quarantine and entering the smoky air. The particulates are 280 atm and I’m just doing some research in the safety of my home’s air purifier. The shopkeeper didn’t say she was busy, or ask for me to hold (so she could help someone in person). In response to me asking for a general range of wet food prices, she told me I’d have to come into the store, that she couldn’t help me.When I mentioned that I lived over the hill in Orinda (I need to run one more errand in Berkeley, to curbside pickup fabric to make masks with), she told me I should just find another store if it was too far out of my way. Now, I may pay for good quality food, but I’m not makes out of money. I’m a college student with a 15 yr old cat who’s living a better life than ever bc of the high quality foods I’ve been feeding him. I’m not trying to pay for “express” prettiness or w/e. I was trying to support a small business that prides it self in fair prices. But apparently with the discount nature they discount the need to be well informed or intelligent business people. Turning away customers and practicing poor training/customer service ... not ideal. I’ve grown up putting myself through an applied physics degree, working for small business and as a small business waitress, coffee shop manager, etc. I don’t think hearing someone is trying to stay safe from the air and avoid making a ton of stops should be met with “You have to come see for yourself.”Calling for where food is sourced and how much it is generally priced should not be unreasonable questions for a food supply store. I really wanted to like this place, but I felt the need to warn others (and the business) that their poor research and customer service practices are distasteful. Is that unreasonable?

Best place to get dog food and treats. Nice selection of top notch, high quality food. Good prices and fantastic rewards program. Knowledgeable and helpful staff. Open late.Cool funky historic building with old wooden floors that could probably tell a story or two. Resident African grey parrot always has something to say.Next door/Wild Bird section has selection of goods for supporting wildlife: bee houses, bat houses, lady bug houses, bird houses and bird feeders.

I have shopped at Animal Farm for years and I am dismayed by some of the negative reviews that have been written. I love this store and I am extremely loyal, not despite the staff (as some people have commented), but BECAUSE OF them! One of the owners, John, is very helpful and probably the most knowledgeable person I've ever come across when it comes to all things animal and/or pet related. He has given me advice on everything from how to treat an ear infection to how to get an older cat to eat better to how to ease a puppy's separation anxiety. (I find it interesting that in a recent review, the woman commented that she had been a longtime customer, but yet she referred to "the man behind the counter who said his name was John." Well, I don't think anyone who has been patronizing Animal Farm for "years" would NOT know John since I don't think I've ever been in the store when he WASN'T there!) I've never been treated rudely by ANY of the staff. (Although the parrot behind the counter has told me "good night!" before I was leaving the store....maybe a not so subtle reminder that it's time for me to wrap up my visit???)As for the store itself, it has a great selection of products and the prices are very competitive. They carry the highest quality dog and cat food lines, and the cost is the same or lower than you'll find at any of the large chain stores (if you can even find the same product). That's a pretty good deal when you consider how much more a small, locally owned business has to pay for their products in comparison to the wholesale prices that the big-name stores are able to negotiate for themselves! I have a dog and two cats, so I'm always buying all sorts of other things in addition to pet food (toys, litter, brushes, shampoo and TREATS), and I've found those things are almost always less expensive here than anywhere else (even lower than Target).I don't usually write review, but I really wanted to give this store the kudos they deserve.

I've had great experiences at Animal Farm and have been shopping there for four years. John is especially helpful and knowledgable. Today I went in and told him about my very sick kitty, and he gave me some suggestions for improving her diet to boost her immune system and for getting her to drink more (tuna water!)They have a great selection too.Anyways, I'm a loyal customer and shop there for most of my kitty needs!

I really love this pet supply store. It smells awesome. The people who work there know a lot and seem happy to help. So far, they have had everything I have wanted for my cat. Each time I have been, I felt even better walking out than I did walking in.

I only moved to Berkeley 2 years ago and was delighted to discover Animal Farm, closest thing to the feed stores I love back home. Here's what I've experienced:They do indeed carry the full spectrum of animal foods, accessories and toys. They are indeed very helpful and knowledgeable about products and animals.Their prices are reasonable and affordable for me on a limited budget AND they have those great frequent buyer cards.Hope this balances out some of the negative reviews! I say check them out and see for yourself.

That a really good selection but the woman couldn't mind her own business. She contiounsly giving me direction on my dog. I was so uncomfortable. How I live is none of the seed and pet food Proprietors business it was really a trap when I told my story to a friend he told me how to look up translate into Russian of mind your own business I don't know I mean it's a good product but it's not the only store on the planet. What gives her the right to tell a customer how to behave and live she doesn't know me I don't know her. When I first went to the store last month I was so glad to find such a wide selection but I don't know she wants my business.

The people at Animal Farm are wonderful. We get a special order cat food which no one else carries. And their prices are great. I highly recommend them. Also -check out the bird food and supply store one door down. Part of the same establishment. They have bird houses and bat houses!

I’ve passed this store for years, but never stopped in until the other day.I didn’t necessarily find discount prices, but the owners are friendly and well informed.I commented on the malodorous aroma of my cat’s poo and they suggested that I focus on meat products (I buy pate for my cat because she inhales the chunks then throws up) to see if it eradicates the aroma. He said that cats in the wild normally don’t eat chicken and fish; it’s the marketing that gets to the owners who think they need to offer the gamut of meat/fish options. I bought about a week’s worth of meat only pates — so far, so good.We also had a brief discussion about litter types - grass vs. clay, clumping disposable vs. flushable (and its contribution to the red tide) as I am not ready to change my cat’s litter unless there is a good reason, however, wanted to know what he thought about the various types on the market. Again, very informative.Since I like to patronize local small businesses, I will definitely stop in more often when I am in the neighborhood.

I am a long time patron of Animal Farm. I would not go to any other pet store. I buy cat food, toys, climbing towers along with bird feeders and seeds they respond to questions about food, litter and basic pet health needs honestly and reflecting others opinions on the use of their products. They know my pets and are ready to help. How could you go wrong buying from the owners. I can see going to big box retailers. Regards, David in El Cerrito

I've been a loyal customer for 15 years. My 2 cats are currently 20 years old and continue to be in good health, mostly thanks to the great pet food advice from the owner of this shop. I'm very grateful.

Gentleman clerk, when asked about a cage for a pet that he carries the food for, become oddly weird and very belligerent….he was "offended" at me because I was hoping he could make a suggestion about where to find one….."That pet is no longer popular"…"I have no clue where to get one".Small businesses have been a part of my purchasing choices since adulthood. This is where you have community and helpfulness and a conversation."Oh, okay, sorry to offend you. You carry the pet food, thought you'd know where to get a cage."Yes, "You offended me."I have always chosen this family run business, and been making a choice to support them for 19 years, and been paying more, too. It was a choice I felt was always worth it.After todays rude exchange, I shall never buy from them again. Pet Co. perhaps I was wrong about you...

I moved to this neighborhood a couple of years ago. When I adopted my pup about six months ago, I knew he would love Animal Farm. We walk over and the folks behind the counter always have a treat for him and are very kind. We grab our chewies, chuckit balls, and score the frequent buyer points and head off on our walk.I'm a big supporter of local independent shops and I am so happy to support Animal Farm. The selection is amazing, the staff are helpful, and my pup loves it.

Great local pet store, chock full of great dog stuff. I went there for that but I would have also gone if I'd had a rabbit, bird, wild bird, cat, hamster, Guinea pig... you get the idea!

I bikes here on February 14th and saw they were closed. This was a very convenient place to get dog food in West Berkeley.

I have shopped in this store for years, but will never set foot inside it again. Today I went in to try and find a product that would keep my kitty from pulling his claws on the furniture. The man behind the counter, who called himself "John" and claimed to be the owner, was so rude to me that I was simply astounded. I hate to patronize the big chain stores like PetSmart, but it is preferable to being condescend to and treated with utter disregard.

Really it's the wild bird annex... I go there for seeds for my bird feeder. They have a nice selection and they sell enough that the seeds are fresh, which the wee birdies appreciate.
