I adopted a puppy from this shelter just a week ago come to find out the puppy has parvo, I got to enjoy the puppy for 2 days and then she got sick, the supervisor we talked to was very rude and disrespectful about how she talked to us about our puppy, now my other dogs are exposed to parvo and she wasn’t wanting to cooperate, and hung up on us several times. Finally they took her yesterday to get treatment but when the lady came out to admit her in she was rude and didn’t care and just disrespectful gave us no hope for her and just pretty much told us she’s going to die and it happens and just shrugged her shoulders, these people don’t care about the animals in their shelter. And don’t care if they adopt our puppy’s with parvo and expose multiple other dogs it’s honestly just ridiculous.1st pic is the day we got her last 3 are her sick and wanting nothing to do but lay down.

They do a great job caring for the animals and making it easy to find an animal to adopt. The front desk staff were a little rude. Took our 4 year old to get a dog, found one and went to the desk at 3:20pm. She not so nicely said they stopped taking adoptions after 3:30, saw the clock then said the system was down just so she could leave early. My kid crying because we couldn’t get the dog he picked. Thankfully other staff was willing to try and hold the dog for us.

I've done business with Bakersfield animal control since 2015 they always expedite the service they can answer all my questions and along with Unity Kanine Express during the Wag and Wheels car show it was even better! Free vaccinations and microchipping wow! That was awesome! The volunteers were great.😁

Adopted a puppy on a Saturday morning after waiting a week for her to be ready, they sent her off full of pain killers and anti nausea medication to cover up the fact that she was terribly sick with parvo. I had to put her down barely 24 hours after getting her. I can’t think of any way that they didn’t know something was wrong with the puppy and after reading these comments, I’m not the only person this has happened to. It is their job to keep these animals healthy, and so many of the tests needed to do so are cheap and fast. The animals in this shelter deserve better. Take great caution when adopting from here

It's a very good shelter but they don't take stray cats, I tried to drop off 4 stray kittens I found and they said they couldn't take them. They do help supply formula for the extremely young kittens, but if the cats aren't sick or injured they won't take them.

I have taken twice some kittens found . Everytime i go they ask me to see where i live to see if those animals belong there .Honest i see kitens i tried to help and i dont like how they help base on where u live .Its like they dont want to deal with them .I did adopt a female german sherped from hear in 2019 inna event the conduct every so often to clear the shelters .She was spawned and chiped and all that for like 25 dollars at that time.Overall i dont like how they manage the acceptance of street animals left behind by those that dont care but that event got me a fury friend thats happy to be with my family to this day .

Lady at the front desk is really rude and looks miserable didn’t welcome us at all or even asked us hi how may a help you nothing just stares at the screen like i was a ghost or something. I had to ask her myself if they had any kittens for adoption and just went on and said “we don’t have cats” when she specifically said on Saturday that they would have them on tuesday. Today is Tuesday we call to make sure if she was right and no answer. We drive all the way to the shelter for her to say to us again we don’t have cats like shes a robot how about you guys hire people who actually care for animals and their job and don’t look miserable. And i hope you read this lady because everyone is talking about you in the reviews

I have no one except my babies.Every one is gone now .I love them more than anything. An accident happened an I had to seek help , no money since covid, rent an everything up so high I'm almost homeless. I did what I had to to seek help for pepper "pepper pots".Ellie may is her foster mom . This ASPCA on mount Vernon stole my baby , I believe in an eye for an eye , they stole my baby and think they got away with it.

To be fair, I have not visited this place in person but I do hope my experience with the female receptionist is unique and the organization doesn’t conduct its operations in the same manner. My mom adopted a cat and a dog a year ago but she fell severely ill since, ended up in a convalescent home and the convalescent home does not accept animals. As soon as I shared this with the receptionist she began berating me. The receipt said it’s your responsibility to take care of the pets, we don’t have anything to do with them. And she kept going with a lot more. When she came to a stop, I told her I was only hoping to obtain records related to vaccines or health information for professional dog training purposes. The dog is fearful of people animals, and anything making sudden moves or sounds. Needless to say the dog is in dire need of professional dog training. I am not able to obtain any health/vaccine information on my mom’s pets, it can only be mailed to adopter’s address. I am only trying to figure out the best way to help these 2 little creatures. Am not equipped to properly provide and meet their needs; I live in apartment and don’t have a yard for the dog or outside covered space for the cat so that she doesn’t bolt to the street and get injured or killed.

I want everyone to know that a "Valorie" who works for animal control is the best person for this job, we think so. She was understanding, professional and prompt! She didn't give up , instead she captured the mean dog in our neighborhood and we think she should get a raise! Thanks Valorie!

Went there on a Saturday around 2pm and found a lil Chihuahua I wanted to adopt. I had to go out of town on Sunday so I waited till Tuesday to adopt him, when I got there the Lil dog and it's Lil kennel mate were nowhere to be found. Both Lil dogs where older and showed available on Saturday, they had only been there for 3 weeks. I called to ask about the Lil Chihuahua and the Lady told me he wasn't here anymore. I was soo mad that these Lil old girls would get put down so fast. Other dogs had been there well over a month and they murdered 2 Lil girls because they thought no one would love them :(I saw another Lil dog with one eye and his Lil teeth sticking out and the rude lady at the counter told me the dog was no longer available she didn't say he was adopted. I decided to call to see if someone else could help me and the lady very hesitant told me...oh yeah that dog was adopted. He had no sign at his kennel saying he was adopted. The truth is once they place these Lil babys on their kill list they won't even allow for them to be adopted. They'd rather put them down instead of giving them a forever home!!

My family and I visited this animal shelter 2 days ago. We did not expect to adopt a pet but we did. After having a brief talk with an employee which I forgot his name, Hispanic male with tattoos and earings, we decided to have a meet and greet with a 3 year old black pitbull. Throughout the meet and greet he was extremely helpful and really knew a lot about Sally(that's her name now). I really recommend people adopt from this shelter.

Inquired about a girl, was told he is a girl—even looked online and saw it said GIRL and they gave me a boy… 110% inaccurate information, he has either an incontinence problem or trauma from being neutered.

My husband and myself attended the clear the shelter event. We were successful in finding and bringing home a new furry family member. The staff, volunteers and all those representing products at each gift station, all were Joy filled, pleasant and helpful. We were just amazed by all the high quality goody bags full of stuff they had prepared, and sent home with our new bundle of Joy! It was really impressive.I was also taken by surprise at what a tiny Lady Miss Tammy Mlcoch is. She is a beautiful woman, although not near as tall as she appears to be on the News. What a deceptive little box my TV is.

The staff is rude and unhelpful!Especially when you're searching for your lost dog!Called to see if my dog was there, won't give any info just tell you to come in and check it out. Singe working mom, i can't just take time off between 10 and 4 , then tell me if I care about the dog ive had for 16 years I would just leave my job and risk being fired. The receptionist is a horrible human for this statement.Wish I could give negative stars!

I adopted a great dog, quickly with little paperwork. Only issue is, I didn't get to take him home while waiting for the vet to show up and fix him. So he stayed in their another 9 days

Not sure if the people there are volunteers or paid employees but I thought I was at the dmv. Front desk person was rude! I almost adopted a dog but this lady at the front desk was super rude. I decided it's better to buy a dog, I wanted to adopt one to help reduce animals at the shelter but this lady ignores you as much as possible and once you ask a question it seems she tries her best to be as rude as possible. They need to change front desk personnel and maybe more dogs will be adopted.

Excellent service, my little dog was taken buy a police officer, who arrested me for being under the influence of a prescription drug. Not sure how he got my dog out of my camper that was parked and I was in it sleeping. I had a job cleaning a lot full of tumble weeds in the morning. But I never got my camper back and when I got my stuff out of it, It had been broken into by prying the driver side door open and the inside had been completely ransacked. This was in Bakersfield CA.

I work graveyard at a hospital very close to this shelter. After arriving home at about 0730, I made breakfast and ate. About 30 minutes later I hear a cat crying outside my apartment door. I open the door and notice a very sick cat. The poor thing had nasal secretions green in appearance. It was sneezing and coughing. Very obvious that he had an upper resporatory infections. Aside from that, that animal was severely underweight and dehydrated. I took in the animal and called the shelter on Fruitvale only to be told that they cannot take in the animal because I live in the city (whatever that means) so they referred me to this shelter. I live right behind the shelter on Fruitvale, so I was not very happy about having to take the animal right back to where I just got home from. I call and a lady answers the phone (made a mistake not to get her name) and I explain what is happening. She tells me they do not open until 10 but that they can get me in at 09:30. Once I am there I am at the intake door and I call the number on the door as I was instructed to and another receptionist answers they phone. I'm thinking it was the same lady I had spoke with earlier and tell her I am here with the car. The receptionist proceeds to tell me that they don't open until 10. I said, "I understand that but I had called earlier and I was told I could drop the cat off at 09:30." She asks for the name of the person who told me this and I say "I am not sure I did not ask". She keeps telling me that she's not going to let me in because I don't know the name of the person who told me to arrive at 09:30. Mind you, I waited up after a 12 hour shift to be here to drop off the cat and need to be in beed soon as I return to work the same day. At this point I raise my voice at the receptionist that she can ask around to see who told me this information instead of turning me away. Once someone opens the door, the lady at the door asks "why are you cussing out my staff?" For the record, I was raising my voice not using profanities and if the receptionist can't tell the difference she is not educated nor qualified to work with people- they just hire anyone these days. I find it so disheartening how it is so hard to get an animal in the shelter these days. I understand it is very difficult as they are at capacity but do not punish the bystanders who are just trying to get animals the help they need. I was not going to abandon that cat in this heat and I could not have kept him any longer as he was ill and did not want my own cat to catch the virus. I appreciate the woman who got me in at 09:30 but what I do not appreciate is that rude receptionist lying about me cussing her out and treating me like I was lying about being told to show up at 09:30. Next time, instead of continuously telling me you cannot let me in because I cannot provide you with a name, ask around. The office isn't that big.

Ghetto girl with tattoos at the front desk was useless and rude. Called to ask about vouchers. Said they had to be mailed, was referred by an animal rescue place to go in to the animal shelter and get one today. Showed up, she saw us standing there and didn’t help us at all. When she asked me a question she was so rude and was basically useless. Absolutely horrible workers. Do better

If I could give this office less than 1 star I would!! The fact that these people act like they hate their life's and want to end it all after their shift is an understatement. I mean after all the animal murdering they do on a daily I get it. But us people outside their Job do not understand and we would like to help. But instead you judge and treat us badly! You want to be angry, be angry at the county/city for their pay raises and not putting back money where it really needs to go.

I came here to adopt a kitten and ended up adopting two kittens. It's a great facility, very clean and the animals appear well kept. The staff was very helpful and kind.

I called today and the gal that answered was very rude and hung up on me. I was polite and nice so I don’t think that was the problem. The gal seemed new and didn’t even know the word feral. By my experience and other reviews it seems like they have a problem getting good help there.

Their dogs look well cared for, and I brought one home. She's healthy and energetic. The only thing is it took me 7 attempts to find one that wasn't taken, even though it stated on the cage available!
