This large reserve within farming country is home to a wide variety of birds, reptiles, mammals and other wildlife. However, most of the refuge is closed during the winter.

I went to Bald Knob Wildlife Refuge on Saturday (I'm not a local to the area btw and have never been there before), but it didn't really look like much of a wildlife refuge or nature preserve. Most of the area marked as part of Bald Knob Wildlife Refuge on the map was actually privately owned farmland (mostly deforested, flat fields of crops/agriculture). Is the map even up to date? Why is that considered part of the wildlife refuge? Did it used to be and got sold off and replaced with private farmland and estates? The administration building and visitor contact center was also closed, so not much information was available. I went to one part of the map that looked like it was still forested and had some trails, hoping to find some decent hiking trails. It looks like it's just really long ATV trails that are not ideal as hiking trails. I could not find any hiking trails anywhere. Most of what is left of the "Nature Preserve" looks like it's for hunting, fishing, and ATV riding. I couldn't even find a way to access the lake areas where there are presumably fishing docks or something around because the map did not display any more detailed information about where to access anything except the location of the closed visitor center and some vague trails that were not described at all or labeled or described as ATV trails until you actually physically go to the start of the trails.

I used to love to fish and hunt down there especially sense it's so close to home but with all the regulations and can't even go fishing at night there anymore I never go there it's pretty much for the ducks

This can potentially be a great place to catch fish, but it ain't easy. I have a friend that can consistently catch a mess of bass and crappie, but I don't know how.

Visiting family in the area and wanted to get outdoors for a while, so we explored the refuge for the morning. Enjoyed seeing the different parts, but loved when we got down by the river. There was nobody else there the entire two hours we were at the river. It was peaceful and relaxing, and very comfortable in the trees, even though the day was hot and humid. We saw plenty of different birds and signs of fish and other wildlife.

It would just be a little bit better if you could fish the waterways around the conservation area during the winter time. I do understand tho that they close it off so there isn't poaching or illegal killing of the migratory birds.

I enjoy bird watching at this refuge. Land management has allowed for a good variety of birds, even attracting some species that aren't typical to this regions. My only complaint is it seems to be very unattended by any sort of park ranger. The visitor center is always closed, which means there is no access to the bathrooms either. There is also so much trash that I now carry supplies to collect it myself. Some of the other visitors (or field workers?) can be kind of rude and drive to fast or play loud music, which disrupts the wildlife. I think a park ranger driving through could help some of these issues.

This place is fantastic for wintering and migratory species. Not a lot shaking when I was there this time. I did see quiet possibly the largest assemblage of Scissor-tail Flycatchers ever! Must have been a couple dozen or so on the road between the railroad tracks and the entrance. Also counted 173 American White Pelicans on one pool.

Dirt roads weave their way through fields and swamps full of wildlife. Dive slowly and find a wide variety of creatures.

I've been visiting this important refuge for wildlife regularly since it opened and almost always see something interesting and unforgettable when I drive through the bottomlands and flooded farm fields that make up the complex. Be sure to pick up a refuge map at the entrance station and follow the map so you don't get lost on the back country roads. A great place to visit for anyone who enjoys birding and wildlife watching.

Wow I didn't know I could review the refuge. I give the refuge a 5 star and the people that frequent a -5. Its a pretty trashy place in general, and the water is nasty and muddy. If you like bud lite and Alan Jackson chances are you will have a good time here ;-)

It's very very beautiful. Seen flocks & flocks of geese, seen some greenheads & even a few deer. I will go back there again. It was just a little cold, though, that's coming from a Florida gurl

I had originally given this location a one-star rating and was very dissatisfied with my experience. However, I have changed my mind due to the center calling me and apologizing for not being there when they said they would. My daughter and I got to experience the center, and she got her Blue Goose Passport stamp. Thank you very much BKNWR!

I visit this place several times a year for wildlife photos , and I really like to go and see just what is passing through at that time , it’s always a different experience each time and I have never not been happy with the outcome.
