I needed a good pair of hiking boots.I got online and almost bought a pair from an online retailer but something told me to go down to a local retailer and check out the goods in person instead.I went to The Hike Shack (located downtown on the corner of Gurley street and Montezuma) where I was greeted upon arrival by a young lady named “Glory” (as in Glory, Glory, Hallelujah) who is an experienced hiker, and she escorted me to their boot selection section to help me with a fitting.They had all of the top brands that I had researched online in stock! Brands like: Salomon, Oboz, Lowa, Hoka, LA Sportiva, Salewa, and others. Amazingly (for a small retailer) their prices for those brands were pretty much the same as those of online retailers like REI and Zappos! Who knew?I told Ms. Glory that I wear a size 8 but when she measured my feet she pointed out (to my surprise) that my right foot was just long enough to qualify as a size 8.5 She then brought out several models of Oboz, Salomon and Lowa in size 8.5 and had me try them out in their “inclined obstacle course” to find out if my toes touched the toe box of the boot when my feet were in an incline position as I walked downwards the obstacle’s downward slope.This is a very important thing to test for, because if the toes are able to touch (even lightly) the toe box of a boot as you hike down a steep trail then you will have a condition called “Pistoning” taking place. Pistoning is when the nails of the toes are subjected to blows against the toe box of a poorly fitting boot as you hike down a steep trail. Pistoning will cause the nail bed to become painfully inflamed, turn black and -in some cases- even cause the nail to come off.All of the boots that I tried as a size 8.5 failed that test so Ms. Glory then upped me to a size 9 in a Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid GTX which took care of the pistoning problem.I liked the way that the Salomon Ultra 3 felt and asked to try out the heavy duty Salomon 4D Quest which also felt good too but, because I don’t do heavy duty backpacking or deer hunting or camping I went with their recommendation and chose the Ultra 3 Mid GTX for my Prescott trail hikes instead. Ms. Glory even demonstrated to me a different way to lace and tie the boots for a better fit for hiking.She also told me that I could wear the boots inside their store or inside my home to test them out some more and if they were not to my liking for any reason I could just return them for a store credit provided, of course, that they did not exhibit any kind of outdoor wear and tear. However, the boots fit so comfortably that I opted to walk out of the store wearing them right there and then. And, guess what? At checkout I even got a 10% discount as a Veteran!I shudder to think of the outcome if I had not followed my intuition and gone to the Hike Shack for my hiking boots. If I had bought my boots online ( in a wrong and “pistoning” size 8) instead of buying them at The Hike Shack then, I would have wasted a lot of good money on a pair of boots that would have been uncomfortable to wear and would have also been bad for my toenails as well.Internet shopping is convenient but, when it comes to buying something that you’re going to wear it’s best to shop local and in a store where you can get experienced help and also test the item right there and then for the right fit for you.Based on my boot shopping experience I heartily recommend The Hike Shack for your outdoor needs. Five Stars!

Locally owned business. Well stocked with everything needed for climbing, hiking, camping gear. Great if you forget a jacket although expect to pay normal going rates for brand products. The ladies are well versed in many areas and have good knowledge of trails. Friendly service.

My sales person(wish I had her name) truly was an expert fitter. She has superior knowledge about feet and running and all the different types of shoes they offer. I'm whacking out 6 mile trail runs in my new altras with insert. The foot pain is gone and my 62 year old recently replaced knees love them!

The sales guy sold me a sleeping bag and sleeping mattress that’s suppose to fit inside the sleeping bag so it does not move around. Long story short the mattress part does not fit inside the sleeping bag and if you are unable to have a mattress in the sleeping bag it’s a very thin material on the back. Even though it’s a 15 degree sleeping bag, if you can’t put the mattress part in the back it is freezing cold. I wish the sales guy knew that the different brands have different size variables. Spent a grand at this place and they will not exchange my sleeping bag I got a week ago when the sales rep picked it all out for me and suggested it… had the receipt not the tags because I didn’t think something like this would happen. Not my fault and I have to pay the consequences. Very frustrating and disappointing.

Good selection of hiking gear, but can be a bit pricey. We found some great boots for my son at a great price, so deals can be found. Maybe a little light on the clothes options, but certainly a great place to browse as they have some cool and I retesting gear.

Very friendly staff! I was visiting my brother and this was one of the places we stopped. Wonderful climbing stuff and reasonable prices. Store is set up cleanly and efficiently. Staff is very friendly(: I wanted a sticker for my car that had Prescott on it, and they happened to be all out at the time. The guy at the cash register was very sweet and helpful in directing me to places that may have stickers. Highly recommend this place. They have camping and climbing gear, along with hats and boots.

My wife and I went in last week to look at some boots. We didn't really know what we were looking for and hadn't purchased boots since 1999.Caleb literally went through their entire extensive selection of boots and explained in great detail the pros and cons of each. What the best boots would be for various types of trails, and even some lacing techniques. The knowledge, friendliness, and customer service he provided was awesome. Thanks Hike Shack! The Staff is amazing, Regan, Caleb, Amanda & Matt and probably a few I can't remember. My 1st visit to the Hike shack was in February 2020. They fitted me in an amazing pair of Hiking boots. I am new to the hiking world, everyone was so helpful.They allowed me to take my time and were very attentive. I had an issue with the boots 7 months later. They started the warranty process. I am very please to say they presented me with a new pair of boots once the manufacturer approved the warranty. I am so grateful.THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE STAFF.

The level of customer service is tremendous. From the initial inquiry phone call, to the in-store experience, to the after-sale follow-up have been excellent. I have a very difficult to fit, high instep and Arch, wide center part, with a narrow toe box. Raigan took the time to measure, recommend, and find a product that would fit my foot. Like a glove. In over 40 years, these are the first boots I have had that actually fit me correctly.Their selection seems decent. I was looking for a specific type of boot, so did not explore other options. I know they have different levels of durability of Footwear, from casual hiking up to wilderness trekking capable.Highly recommended!

It's an allright place that has a variety of outdoor equipment. I would strongly suggest doing your own gear research before making any purchases. Bought a water filter without any foreknowledge and only through recommendations of employee. Very much regretted the purchase for the first Month I was on the AT and replaced it as soon as I could.
