Such a lovely, local restaurant! Great place for breakfast or lunch with a great range of options, including vegetarian fare. I would highly recommend the Fancy Grilled Cheese. Fresh homemade baked goods as well, which are delicious. Cannot recommend enough that you dine here!

I recent visited the Flying Squirrel Bakery Cafe for breakfast, and it was simply delicious. My order wasn't anything over the top - black drip coffee and Talkeetna Toast (avocado toast with tomato, micro greens, and seeds on freshly baked bread) - but it was PHENOMENAL. The fresh ingredients, especially the homemade bread, sent this simple breakfast completely over the edge. We spent about 10 days in Alaska, and this was by far one of my favorite meals... A true testimony to the impact of "from-scratch" food and fresh ingredients. As an added bonus, they had fresh, homemade vegan almond macaroons! 🤤Pros: Homemade bread, fresh ingredients, good vibes overall

The place smells amazing with such sweet and friendly staff. So much homemade goodness! The veggie quiche was full of tasty greens and came out hot. The whole wheat bagel with smoked salmon had great flavor without overwhelming the flaky salmon with too much smoke. I didn't get to try the avocado toast but it looked great, good size portion with lots of avocado. The cinnamon walnut ruggelach wasn't too sweet. I really enjoyed the cardamom bun. Definitely make a point to go but remember home made food takes time :)

Such a great find! Recommend to me by an AK local. Food and staff are divine. I ordered the Soup/Sandwich combo. Chili was stellar. Great Vegan friendly options. And oh the homemade bread. I ordered some desserts to take to my visit with grandma. Will go again!

The food took longer than what I would consider normal but was delicious still! This place is adorable. They have great coffee and breakfast sandwiches. They have a cute seating area.

Nice cafe in Talkeetna with plenty of healthier options. Came here for breakfast this past weekend. We ordered ahead online which you can do through their website--I recommend this especially during the busy summer! Everything was hot and ready for us when we arrived. I got the not-a-breakfast burrito which I didn't ask but based on the ingredients I'm pretty sure it's vegan. It was delicious and filling. My husband got the smoked salmon bagel and really enjoyed it. Good coffee too, and my husband got their house made rhubarb soda which was great. I've been here once before just to get bakery goods and those were all great too--especially their "Kimmie" cookies! Someday I'll come back and try their lunch menu. Their pizza looks good too, which they offer only a few days a week in the evening.

Prices are high, but you get good food.We had a special sandwich and veggie chili. Both exceeded expectations! The bread that came with the chili ( I believe was rye sunflower seed ) was amazing! I’m a local and this is my first time eating here. I have no idea why I haven’t eaten here yet. But dang!!! We also got a slice of lemon cranberry poppy coffee cake, the slice was generous. We got orange juice and peppermint tea too. They have to-go options available and their to-go packages are eco friendly! Very surprised at that! I would suggest eating here. The ladies behind the counter helped me in my decision on if I want spinach on my pizza for pizza night, I told them of my experience with another locals pizza place and their spinach pizza( it was a bad experience ). I explained I was concerned about it tasting like fish like the other place and was wondering if they sauté it first. The lady was put back a bit at such a description of my past experience with local pizza. She said it’s fresh but it gets wilted in the wood fired oven. I think we will try it again from this new to us place.*We went back later in the day and got pizza. ONG was it good!!!! We got the creamy garlic 4 cheese and the pepperoni. Sooooo good!!!

Nice smelling bakery. Has everything you can think of. Pizza, soup, bread, baked goods, espresso drinks, and tea. Friendly service and very affordable! Purchased chocolate croissant, Dana bars, ruggelach, and a bag of locally grown potatoes. $6.50 for 5lb bag. Would definitely stop by here again.

Nostalgic little café in the woods. I like the idea behind this place. Natural, organic, “REAL FOOD” from scratch. It’s a GREAT objective, but food needs to taste great as well. I’m always a matcha girl, but I didn’t like the matcha here. It tasted more watery, rather than creamy. And it had a spicy note of flavor to it, like a spiced chai, but with a lot more kick. I personally don’t think the flavors go well together but then again I like my matcha on the sweet side, sometimes with a splash of coconut. I did enjoy the Mexican chocolate chai, it tasted, not far from as I had imagined it, and I enjoyed the kick it had since the notes pair nicely together, but did wish it had a bit more cream. The quiche was pretty good, my kids enjoyed it, but I wasn’t a fan of the crust, which was the part I was most looking forward to since it was gluten free. It was extremely dry and even hard to cut. I think it was made with corn meal. Personally I’d go with a flaky sour cream gf ‘pie’ crust. There’s many ways to make it but I do mine with an all purpose gluten free flour, baking powder, salt, butter, sour cream, etc. It would pair flavorful with this quiche. The eggs on the other hand were to the perfect texture. It said it came with meat but the generous ‘slice’ I got only had only a few very very small pieces. But as I know not every slice is going to be equal, so I may have just ended up with a lacking slice. I still would have enjoyed more meat like in the photos. It also came with gluten free bread. They were also very generous with the bread slices, which were mostly end pieces but still good nonetheless. However, since the gf bread is a more dense, dry bread rather than a soft moist bread, I would have preferred it heated up a bit more because they were REALLY hard, like cardboard, but after taking them home, heating them up and adding some butter they were enjoyable. I also ordered a sandwich, which didn’t quite look like the ones on Facebook. I don’t know if I would get it again. Being the gf bread I had to take it apart and heat up the bread along with meat so it wasn’t so dry. I was mostly looking forward to the balsamic sauce, but it was not quite enough for dry gluten free bread and as you can see in the photos it was only on one side of the sandwich, which left the other side bland. So I did end up having to take it home and added some flavor and more sauce I ended up having to whip up for it.Originally, my least favorite thing was the carrot ginger soup. It was supposedly the special, but at $10.50, not including tax and tip, it wasn’t worth even a quarter of that. I did take it home and added some flavor to it. I started with some pink Himalayan salt, a bit of cinnamon, cardamom may have been good but I decided against it. I also wanted to make it a little sweet and creamy so I added some homemade sweet cream I had and it completely changed the entire flavor of the soup. My kids were even fighting over it! I took a photo of it, after slightly stirring in the cream and it even looks tastier. It was 10 out of 10 after some tweaking. I can say with confidence that the ingredients they did use were real/natural in any case and in the end it made for a delicious soup. They have a really great selection of options, of not only drinks but food as well. Even beer and wine. Their pizzas I saw online look really good. I don’t drink coffee but my friend said hers was good. They had a decent selection of sweets as well. I’m not a big fan of sugary foods, but thought since I was traveling it would be nice to get a few gf treats. All delicious. My favorite was their fudge/chocolate bars, definitely a guilty pleasure and probably the cream of the crop for chocolate fanatics. I suggest trying a dessert and maybe some for the road.I want to be clear I do recommend trying this cafe, but I believe constructive criticism from the customers who keep places like this going, can only help grow and make greater. I’d love to try again sometime down the road and even switch my rating from 4 stars to a 5.

What a great little local treasure this place is. Amazingly fresh and tasty food. Great breads and baked good. Amazing coffee. We will be back here. The best food I have had in Talkeetna. Beautiful mushrooms growing in the gardens. Couldn’t stop admiring them.

As a group we tried several made to order and bakery items - they were all delicious. Non bakery items are very vegan/vegetarian focused and would need alot of customization for some palettes. They do have lots of vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. We purchased a walnut cinnamon swirl bread that we made french toast out of - it was good with the exception of the top that was quite burnt. The only coffee beverage purchases by our group was good, but we had enjoyed alotmof coffee that we thought was better as we travelled throughout Alaska. Good location and clean bathrooms.

Lovely day spent enjoying the views and warmed up here with a delicious bowl of vegetarian potato cheese soup. The bread served with it was so yummy, but the black bean brownie was my favorite! Highly recommend this hospitable, friendly, and delicious spot in paradise!

A nice little hip cafe in the middle of nowhere. Both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was reasonably speedy. You do have to clean your own table after. All the food we had (creamy tomato soup, green salad, roast beef sandwich, and chili) were quite good. Their bread was excellent too, nicely paired with the soup. Has good amount of parking space.

Fantastic homemade bakery items. The best Jarlsberg and ham croissant I've ever had. Great atmosphere. We just simply had to take a couple of bakery goodies for the trip back to anchorage. Oh so good!

Great place for baked goods and wood fire pizza. The rhubarb-ade on tap was tart and delicious. We got the Mediterranean pizza and the pear and bri pizza. Both were excellent. I just wish the pear pizza had more bri, some bites were a little dry. The rhubarb cake made for a yummy dessert, if you like rhubarb I would recommend getting the cake.

Aside from taking the order there was no service. The pizza was one step above cardboard.Lesson learned.. won’t eat here again. Waste of money.Only plus side is it’s a cute place to sit and there is an area for kids to play.

On vacation several years ago, we stopped here for lunch. Great find! Wife had a delicious veggie soup. We can’t remember name, maybe African-something? She came home and found a similar recipe that we’ve now eaten for years. We call it Alaskan Flying Squirrel soup.

Great place for breakfast, lunch or dinner when they are open for pizza! The menu was great with kid friendly options, vegan, and gluten free. This would be a go to place if I lived closer. The staff was friendly and remembered who their customers were even new ones 😊

Cannot say enough good things about this place! Service was excellent as always, the food was fresh & interesting, and the drip coffee was seriously stellar.. everything was so yummy we had to get more to go! Even if they didn't have the best staff/menu/coffee, I'd still go just to hang out for the ambience.. we love just chilling and admiring the local art, so this is a must everytime we visit Talkeetna!

The artisan bread is fresh made, the ingredients are local and it's all put together into a magical food experience. It's a tragedy if you miss this gem on your visit to Talkeetna.

I’ve been coming to Talkeetna since 2008, and I’ve been to The Flying Squirrel about 4-5 times and each time I go, it takes me years to go back, kind of like I hear about women getting pregnant after the memory of child birth wears off!😉😉The bakery goods are always yummy and the items you order are usually pretty good if they get the order right. However, I saw a few comments in other reviews of good service which blows my mind…this, along with the high prices is why don’t come often. We have a cabin in Talkeetna and I come 5-6 times a summer and yet I’ve been 4-5 times since 2008!This time it was about 10:30am and I we were starting a hike late so I thought it wouldn’t be busy so we would be in and out quick! Not so fast my friend! We had one couple in line in front of us who finished ordering about 30 seconds after we got there. While the person who took their order started working the coffee machine, it took her or anyone else in the kitchen 8 minutes to even acknowledge we were at the counter, which was why I hesitated to go back! In all, over 30 minutes to get a few bakery items and a breakfast sandwich. Meanwhile 3-4 other ladies milling around in the kitchen doing something, some of the time couldn’t be bothered with customer service while the soul person working the counter is up to all kinds of gyrations on the coffee machine and customers just stand in line like Russians in the ‘80’s waiting for bread, and stand, and stand, and stand…it might be 5 years before I go back again, and I’ll regret it again. At least the service is consistent since I first visited in about 2008 or 2010? I liked the comment: capitalists pricing and a Marxist experience! Nailed it with far fewer words. My hope is that management will be responsive to my review and create a much more efficient customer service experience. I’ll be back late August to try the Flying Squirrel again and if they respond I would love to update my review!!

I really like this place everything we had was delicious. I only wish they served sandwiches after 3:00 p.m. my husband thought the Rosemary and ginger shortbread cookies were divine.
