We have adopted 2 canines from Shelby Humane and both experiences were very professional and well managed. We’ve toured the Columbiana facility and it was clear that dogs and cats are well cared for while awaiting adoption. Definitely a good place to adopt from to bring home a furry friend.

I highly recommend getting your next furry friend from here. They always have so many animals that need help, and they will cover the cost for most common shots, heartworm treatment and spay/neuter surgery! Just got two of their babies, a two month old kitten and a five year old dog. Some of the best and sweetest animals I've seen in a long time. If you can't have animals, please consider donating blankets, bags of food or money to help this amazing cause.

We lost our house to a fire and had no choice to surrender. We believed they'd find good homes or we could get them back once we were in a stable place. Three weeks later we check available adoptions and they aren't there. Hoping for the best we call, only to be told they were euthanized... in less than 3 weeks!!! We didn't even get a call. Even if all we could do was to hold them as they went. Something, anything. Why even call yourself a Humane Society if you only give the dogs a 3 week chance! I worked for a humane society before and stupidly thought they were all the same. We were always packed with dogs and would take more in daily. I knew dogs that had been there for years, and others we would contact other humane societies or rescues if we just absolutely were having difficulty adopting. But this place gave ourbabies THREE WEEKS!!!! So great now we've lost our home and our dogs. Fantastic.

I am very impressed with all of the hard working and friendly staff at Shelby Humane. There are so many to choose from beautiful kittens and cats. Puppies and dogs make times to visit the Shelby Humane and yall never regret. I can't remember all your names. But I would like to thank you all especially Ms. Karlie. Y'all awesome!!!!!

There is a special place in heaven for people who try to save dogs. If you are ever able to take care of a dog you should definitely adopt one of these poor animals they just want to love and be loved.

Dropped my pups off the be spayed on a Sunday @4:45pm. And no one in the shelter cared to check to see if they were there or if they had left for surgery until the van arrived beck to the shelter. So they were in their cage for 23 hours! Unattended!

I have been here 4x and each time my family has chosen an animal cat or dog, that animal is unavailable. How hard is it to place on the animal cage unavailable before an family sees it. If you can see it on the computer it's not hard to finish the paper trail. If they can't be shown then make it known before a family falls in love with it.

Animals up for adoption aren’t always spayed/neutered and vaccinated yet so you may have to wait a few days to a week to be able to actually take the animal home. But it’s clear they love and care about these animals and it’s a great shelter to support if you’re looking to adopt. I’m sure they could also use volunteers and donations!

Great experience with great people. We adopted our beautiful furever fur baby from them Polo, which we changed her name to Zoey. Would recommend anyone to go there looking for your next fur baby. 💜

If I could give no stars I would. Went to see about 2 cats. Actually talked to someone they called me back after I had left a message they said both where still there. we drove 1.5 hrs we had an appointment at 4:30 last friday. We waiting for this girl to flirt with a guy till 4:58 they close at 5 finally get waited on and find out one was sent to pets Mart ok the other was still there the girl that was handling him was very rough with him after he had just had surgery he and others hissed at her as soon as she walking in the room which put us off a bit with this cat at first he wound up scratching and biting her. With the way he was handled I don't blame the cat. She tossed him back in the cage and said he will be under a 10 day quarantine because he bit her but we could get him after that but couldn't put him on a hold for us or anything. We ask if he was good with other cats she said she didn't know and after finding a couple of cats that didn't hiss at her as soon as she got close she draged them out and shoved them in the ones face (while eating) up against the cage and said he seams fine. She left the room and the one that we wanted was nussling the cage me my husband and my 5 year old son pet him though the cage. He was as sweet as he could be. I called for 5 days sent emails and no one would return my calls I finally got a call back to find out they are not letting us adopt him because he was feral and we have small children. Then she says he was adopted yesterday. She was not concerned at all about how the cat was treated or anything else. These people don't care that the animals are not being treated right at all and love to lie to you. Oh and the other cat that was gone was adopted the night before from pets mart he has been there 2 days and last I checked him and 2 others that where also adopted where still on there sight and they are still telling people that they are there and ready for adoption. If the cat we wanted was feral they should have known that long before he was up for adopting and it should have said something about that. Not that he was sweet and loving. It did say barn cat but that was all. We where looking for 2 cats 1 inside and 1 outside he was going to be the outside as we had already found our inside cat a couple days before. We where lied to and they don't care about the treatment of there animals this place is horrible

Love everything you all do to help animals! They do an exceptional job at keeping the plan clean and the animals taken care of!Visited this location twice so far. Spoke to a lady about adoption yesterday, I was disappointed that she did not help me or encourage me in any way to proceed with adoption. She is vague and reluctant to answer my questions which I found very odd. I did not end up adopting because of the lack of information. Another lady who thought she was being helpful provided me with misinformation about the intake date on the dog I was interested in adopting and was adamant on having me be a 100% sure about adopting with the lack of information and misinformation. I wish she took the time to speak to me. I was not planning on adopting if I wasn't a 100% sure either but needed someone to answer my questions without getting the feeling that I was wasting their time...I had an appointment which is highly commended. Without an appointment, you will NOT be assisted, as previous reviews posted. On my first visit I was not aware and went without an appointment and no one was available to answer my questions. Lady at the front desk did apologize to me which I was professional and I appreciated that.I know that not all volunteers are the same and realize that my experience with a couple of them there does not define everyone else who dedicates their time to this facility and the animals there.

I accompanied my mother today as she looked for her “special connection”.The reason for my rating is because of the “adoption room/meet room”. There was no seating, and had not be cleaned after the last family. There were two large puddles of urine, one of which I slipped in. I cleaned up what I could with the paper towels I found in the room, but there was no trash can.I recommend bringing noise protection if you plan on entering the kennel area. Lots… and lots of dogs. *Please adopt*Alex at the front was a joy. Knowledgeable and extremely helpful, not to mention friendly.There was another front desk worker today, I sadly did not get her name, but she was also very helpful.

They do what they can for sure. In the process of adopting a dog and they misinformed me of the breed and age of my dog. She was in small dog room. Said she was a pug/ blue heeler when she definitely doesnt have pug in her. After researching she is a boxer blue heeler and its very obvious given her underbite and face. They also told me she was over a year old and full grown. If they would have paid attention to her bahavior it is super obvious she is still a puppy no more than 5 months old. When i brought her in to foster until she got fixed she was sick and wouldnt eat, i called multiple times and emailed and they never responded. They had no concern. I know they overloaded but it would be nice if they showed a little concern

I am not one to leave reviews but this girl deserves the recognition. I had multiple issues throughout the adoption process of my cat, but Haley was absolutely fantastic! She was never anything short of polite, patient, and was always helpful. Huge thanks to Haley for making the difficulties easier and being as kind as can be. Wouldve left a 2 star review, but i would give herself 6 stars if i could

I was pleased with the staff! They were very helpful and kind! They answered my questions with knowledge available! I loved the clean and look of the shelter and the animals are well taken care of. I would and will recommend Shelby humane to others!

My kids and I have volunteered with Shelby humane in the past and recently adopted a few animals. The staff was great. They are working with very limited resources and in a stressful environment but still managed to have great attitudes and were exceptionally kind to the animals and helpful through the adoption process.

Despite signs stating they were short staffed/training, everyone was kind & helpful & despite the fact we were definitely unprepared to adopt. Thankfully, we were able to make a quick decision (or rather she chose us). They are doing an amazing job caring for all these rescues! Definitely will consider rescuing again!

I came from Atlanta Georgia to adopt a puppy and was not disappointed call. I felt as though they were very professional friendly informative and for a shelter compared to others I have seen very clean your phone. I did about the puppy that day and I'm very pleased.

On August 29, 2023 we adopted three puppies! The experience was amazing and so was the staff. W actually planned to adopt one or two senior dogs but worried that there may be problems since we already had two senior cats. Came to browse with my son, and ended up finding our new fur baby! Great selection of furry friends with animals of all ages. The workers/volunteers are absolutely amazing and super helpful. The only advice I have is to get a door for the puppy room and the elderly dog room so they don't get as scared with the big dogs barking. This is a great place and always looking for volunteers to come and help with the animals. Definitely recommend Shelby Humane to anyone looking for a new pet! Micah, now named Mazikeen aka Maze, is a great addition to the family and we couldn't be happier with her. She loves to play with the kittens, chew on her toys and eat! Also, they have a low spay/neuter program that does a wonderful job!#DON'T SHOP, ADOPT!!

We just adopted today!The staff had been very polite and friendly with us. This was also my first time personally getting to adopt so for me it was a huge deal. Apryl was our adoption counselor they had been a huge help we couldn’t be happier! Sadly I never caught the name of the front desk employee but they had also been a huge help! I’d strongly encourage anyone willing and able to foster/adopt these wonderful pets that need a forever home!To all the staff thank you very much!!!

Didn't go inside. They wanted $50 per animal to be able to drop them off which we didn't have. Wasted trip to Columbiana from Hoover. The attendants were very nice and explained what the money was used for, which I liked. We just didn't have the money for our 3 kittens born in March 2023 and 1 puppy born July 2022.

These dogs need homes! There were so many there with the saddest faces you've ever seen. We were able to take this sweet one out for a bit to see how he would fit with the fam. But they all had that "take me with you" look. If only I could.

Ive adopted two dogs from here. Both times the shelters were pretty disorganized. I could have walked out with any dog I wanted and no one would have noticed. Both dogs contracted kennel cough and the overall vibe of the place was kinda wacko. But still, they get the job done.
