Great place, friendly staff, unique items, lots of treasures! And what you buy help the animals like food, bedding, vet bills, just think they not cold there -they are in warm place so when you buy items, from the little thrift store right beside shelter you help a lot .....thank you 💗

They have a great thrift store, and all the money goes to the animals. Pictures of some of my great finds !

Anyone who has something negative to say about this shelter needs to put their money, time. Compassion, effort, blood sweat and tears into VOLUNTEERING here and help make a difference, rather than dog down the hard work and endless efforts of these overworked people who do it for the pets. Why don't you come in and adopt a few pets...be part of the SOLUTION, not the PROBLEM. The people here have to look into the eyes of an animal who has never known love and try to convince them that not all humans are evil garbage, while holding back tears. ADOPT!!! DONATE!!! HELP THEM MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!

Look people, The Athens pound is what it is and judging it does not change it UNTIL THE people of Limestone County change their thinking. The number of animals that end up there are not there because the ATHENS POUND adopted that cute pup that the kids wanted and then a few months later were no longer interested b/c it needed to be fed, walked, loved, nurtured and played with. That is Mom and Dad.The dog who has gotten older and no longer interests the people who adopted it cannot help life. We all get old. Yet, would you want to be discarded when your older? The cat who came from an unwanted litter, ended up in a pound, shelter or rescue and got adopted by someone who shined like the stars as an adopter.....until kitten turned into cat and cat got pregnant......didn't put herself or her batch of kittens there.Yes, the Athens pound had odor issues. So, do most city/county run pounds when they are constantly OVERLOADED with people's cruelty and lack of responsibility to begin with. These pounds and shelters do the best they can. When you get as many animals in as they do, you can only do so much and they try to give every animal they can A SECOND, THIRD OR FOURTH chance. Some animals come in unadoptable from illness, injury or having been mistreated and become aggressive. Based on what I have seen from many pounds and shelters, I can understand why these animals might be leery of humans.SO....while your throwing off on this pound and the situation it is, the PEOPLE who remain uneducated about the animal populous, say/neuter, puppy mills, responsibility and how the many diseases such as: PARVO, Distemper, kennel cough etc happen then maybe you should stop ragging on the pound. When you have daily turn ins and strays, you only have so much time and space to move the animals around to, to keep the environment halfway sanitary and safe.I've watched the lady who WORKS all day to get these animals into rescues and no kill shelters and/or fostered on the phone in her office. They do care......why don't the people who make the problem CARE?

I adopted a kitten from here and the week after he was extremely sick and less than a pound in weight. The only reason he lived was because we force fed him food and formula. He caught feline herpes from this shelter. I had a friend who adopted 2 puppies from this shelter as well and within the week they were both deathly ill.
